A global music enterprise found their corporate global digital asset management system continually outgrowing its storage infrastructure. They needed a flexible enterprise data and storage management infrastructure capable of growing as required. The ability to include cloud storage as a storage resource in the overall solution was critical.
In addition, they realized disaster recovery (DR) was missing from their current implementation. It was necessary that any new solution include disaster recovery capabilities including making multiple copies, stored on various mediums, and in different geographies. The process for restoring the digital assets would need to be as fast and as failsafe as possible.
Requirements
- Policy based, automated workflow for processing and distributing file assets
- Support for multiple sites and storage resource types including cloud storage
- Policy based copies of assets on various mediums (disk, tape-in-library, tape-on-shelf, cloud storage, cloud deep archive)
- Enterprise data management scale and functionality
- Enterprise Storage Management scale and functionality
- The recovery process to be capable of rapid delivery of current files with service level objectives for delivery of other classes of file.
- Multiple copies to reside in multiple geographies
MTMP’s Storage Management with Disaster Recovery Solution
Multiple components were included in the overall design. The data to be managed had to be analyzed and key metadata harvested. Automated policy driven engines manage file movement through the various storage resources and tiers. The same engines manage policies regarding multiple copies and placement of copies in designated locations – primary site, remote site, cloud, etc. The solution integrated enterprise data management with enterprise storage management placing the right data on the right storage resources.
Another component of the overall solution is a LTFS tape NAS solution with an integrated disk cache and LTO tape library. This enables fast and reliable disaster recovery processes. It also automates the execution of multi-copy policies and facilitates the generation of off-site copies. The addition of LTO tape adds both significant data protection and long term economic advantages to the solution. Implementing with LTFS means the valuable assets, the data, are reliably stored in a non-proprietary format avoiding vendor lock-in.
The resulting solution which combined enterprise data management and enterprise class storage management created a resilient and robust infrastructure capable of supporting the high growth rate and evolving needs of the enterprise’s Digital Asset Management system. An additional benefit was the implementation of DR for the system’s data.
